What is Aikido?

The literal translation of Aikido is “the path of harmony.” Though it is first and foremost an art of self defense, the goal in practicing Aikido is not to overcome an opponent but rather to achieve control of a violent situation, preventing greater escalation.

The practice of Aikido relies on more than just physical strength or athletic ability. It requires and cultivates balance, coordination, concentration and relaxation. Because of this, Aikido can be practiced by men and women, from a wide range of ages, and physical abilities.
